Additional Information
Headquartered in Limassol and operating regional branches across all districts of Cyprus, the Center for Preventive Paediatrics "Americos Argyriou" specializes in preventive paediatrics, with particular expertise in the implementation of population-based screening programmes for pregnant women and newborns.
The Center is a non-profit, non-governmental organization and serves as the official provider of three national population-based screening programmes, offered free of charge to all pregnant women and newborns in Cyprus, ensuring equitable access to preventive healthcare and early diagnosis.
To support its operations, the Center receives a partial grant from the Ministry of Health, covering approximately 50% of its annual budget. The remaining funding is secured through contributions from businesses, organizations, foundations, and individuals who support its mission:
Prenatal Screening Programme
The programme aims to facilitate the early detection of fetal chromosomal abnormalities and is offered to all pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy. It provides expectant parents and healthcare professionals with essential information to support informed clinical decision-making.
Newborn Screening Programme
The programme enables the early detection of congenital and inherited disorders in newborns, allowing treatment to begin before irreversible complications develop. It currently includes screening for congenital hypothyroidism and phenylketonuria (PKU), with additional conditions being introduced as part of the programme's ongoing expansion.
Newborn Hearing Screening Programme
The programme aims to achieve universal screening for congenital hearing loss, enabling early diagnosis and timely intervention. Early identification and management maximize children's opportunities to develop speech, language, communication, and cognitive skills, supporting their successful social and educational development.
